Openly gay fashion designer Jay McCarroll is best known for winning the first season of the Bravo reality series Project Runway. However, he also chose to turn down his prize, which included $100,000 and studying under the Banana Republic clothing chain to help develop his own fashion label. This was due to his objection to a clause in the contract, which stipulated that the Project Runway production company would permanently own 10% of every professional business venture he started. In a recent article published by New York magazine, he stated that he was poor enough to be homeless, and that he slept at other people’s houses. He also said that he tended to fall asleep in his work space, completely inebriated. However, he later turned around on his statements, claiming that he was making them all up.
